I was so thrilled to be going to Montalcino. I love Brunello. Sangiovese is one of my favorite grapes so to be going to the region of 100% Sangiovese wine was exhilarating. While I very much enjoyed the wine and the beauty, nothing could really beat the lunch I had on this day.
Touring with such a large group in such a rustic area, breaking off into smaller groups is a necessity. Myself and 3 other girls broke off and walked into a restaurant, which looked closed but the host sat us immediately. By this point in the trip I was tired of pasta. I had overdone it. So when I saw chicken in a Brunello sauce and we were in the region for Brunello, I went for it immediately. When my plate was put in front of me I was mortified. While it smelled delicious, it looked like random hacked up meat covered in ink. As I took a deep breath and then my first bite, I was in utter bliss. I cannot even describe what I tasted; I just know that it was the best meal I encountered in Italy. Hands down.
